Learn the Younger Futhark

The Younger Futhark is the runic alphabet of the Viking Age, used across Scandinavia from roughly the 8th century onward. It reduced the older 24-rune Elder Futhark to just 16 runes, from Fé (wealth) to Ýr (yew), so several runes carry more than one sound. This page pairs a full reference chart with a self-scoring flashcard quiz so you can drill rune recognition — useful for students of Norse and Viking history, writers, and anyone learning to read runestones.

How the quiz works

Each round shows one Younger Futhark rune and four possible names. Pick the name you think matches; the quiz marks it right or wrong, reveals the correct answer, and keeps a running score, current streak, and best streak for the session. Press Next rune for a new card or Reset score to start over. Every rune and answer choice is selected with the Web Crypto API, entirely in your browser.

Younger vs. Elder Futhark

This page covers the standard long-branch (Danish) Younger Futhark. It is the Viking-Age successor to the Elder Futhark: 16 runes instead of 24, with reused shapes and merged sounds. Short-twig variants and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc are separate systems. For the older 24-rune row, see the Elder Futhark chart & quiz; for a single random draw instead of a quiz, try the Younger Futhark rune generator.
