Learn hiragana and katakana (the kana)
Japanese uses two kana syllabaries: hiragana (for native words and grammar) and katakana (for loanwords and emphasis). Each covers the same 46 base gojūon sounds, from あ/ア (a) to ん/ン (n). Learning the kana — 46 hiragana and 46 katakana — is the first step to reading Japanese, before kanji. This page pairs a full romaji · hiragana · katakana reference chart with a self-scoring flashcard quiz so you can drill kana recognition in whichever script you're studying.
How the quiz works
Pick Hiragana, Katakana, or Both, and each round shows one kana glyph with four possible romaji readings. Choose the reading you think matches; the quiz marks it right or wrong, reveals the correct reading, and keeps a running score, current streak, and best streak for the session. Press Next kana for a new card or Reset score to start over. Every glyph and answer choice is selected with the Web Crypto API, entirely in your browser.
When to use it
Use this quiz to memorize hiragana and katakana and their sounds, prepare for a Japanese course, review before an exam, or just test yourself. The Both mode mixes the two scripts so you can practice reading either. For a single random kana instead of a quiz, try the Random Japanese Kana generator.
