Three-Card Tarot Spread
Reading the Past · Present · Future positions
- Past: Roots and influences that led here — what shaped the situation.
- Present: Where things stand now — the current energy and challenge.
- Future: The likely direction if the present course continues.
How the three-card spread works
One draw lays out three distinct cards from the full 78-card deck — the 22 Major Arcana plus the 56 Minor Arcana across Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles — dealt without replacement into fixed Past, Present, and Future positions. Each card gets a fair Upright or Reversed orientation and shows its keyword meaning for that orientation, so you can read the story the three positions tell together.
Fair random selection
The three cards are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates draw and taken from the top of the deck, so no card can repeat within a spread, then each card flips a fair 50/50 orientation when reversed cards are enabled. Rangdom uses the Web Crypto API for random generation, so the next spread is not predictable from previous draws.
Upright and reversed
Keep the “Include reversed cards” toggle on for the traditional 50/50 chance of a reversed card in each position, or turn it off when every card should land Upright.
When to use it
Use this spread for a daily Past · Present · Future reading, journaling prompts, story ideas, or teaching how positional meaning shapes a tarot reading. For a single card, use the Tarot Card generator; to look up or memorize what every card means, see the Tarot Card Meanings chart and quiz.
