How the year ahead tarot spread works

One draw lays out thirteen distinct cards from the full 78-card deck — the 22 Major Arcana plus the 56 Minor Arcana across Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles — dealt without replacement into thirteen fixed positions: a Theme for the Year overview card followed by one card for each month, January through December. The first card sets the tone for the whole year, and the twelve monthly cards trace how that theme unfolds month by month. Each card gets a fair Upright or Reversed orientation and shows its keyword meaning for that orientation, so you can read the story the thirteen positions tell about the year together.

Fair random selection

The thirteen cards are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates draw and taken from the top of the deck, so no card can repeat within a spread, then each card flips a fair 50/50 orientation when reversed cards are enabled. Rangdom uses cryptographically secure randomness from the Web Crypto API, so the next spread is not predictable from previous draws.

Upright and reversed

Keep the “Include reversed cards” toggle on for the traditional 50/50 chance of a reversed card in each position, which often softens or blocks a card's upright energy. Turn it off when every card should land Upright — some readers prefer an all-upright yearly reading for a clearer, more encouraging tone.

When to use it

Use this spread for a New Year reading, a birthday check-in, planning the twelve months ahead, journaling about how a year might unfold, story ideas, or teaching how positional meaning shapes a tarot reading. It reads as entertainment, not a forecast.
