US states and their capitals

This reference lists the capital city of every US state — all 50 states plus the federal district, Washington, D.C., for 51 in total — sorted alphabetically by state, each with its two-letter USPS postal code and US Census Bureau region. The capital is the seat of a state's government, and it is often not the state's largest city: New York's capital is Albany (not New York City), California's is Sacramento (not Los Angeles), and Illinois's is Springfield (not Chicago). Washington, D.C. is not a state but is the national capital, so it is included here and grouped with the South region the way the Census Bureau classifies it. Use the region filter to focus on the Northeast, Midwest, South, or West.

How the quiz works

The flashcard quiz turns the chart into practice, and it asks in both directions: it either shows a state and asks for its capital, or shows a capital and asks for its state. Each round offers four choices, with distractors drawn from the same Census region where possible so the wrong answers are plausible rather than obvious. Pick an answer and the quiz marks it right or wrong, reveals the correct state-and-capital pairing, and keeps a running score, current streak, and best streak for the session. Set the region filter to drill just one region, press Next question for a new card, or Reset score to start over.

Built for study, private by design

Every prompt and answer choice is drawn with the browser's built-in secure randomness (the Web Crypto API), entirely on your device — nothing is sent to a server, and there is no sign-in or tracking of your answers. The chart and quiz work offline once the page has loaded. Ready for the rest of the world? The World Capitals Chart & Quiz covers every country's capital.
