Reading the seven Horseshoe positions

• 1. Past: Influences from before that still shape the question.
• 2. Present: Where the situation stands right now.
• 3. Hidden Influences: Unseen factors and surprises beneath the surface.
• 4. Obstacle: The main challenge or block to work through.
• 5. External Influences: People and circumstances around you.
• 6. Guidance: The attitude or action the cards advise.
• 7. Outcome: The likely result if this course continues.

How the Horseshoe spread works

One draw lays out seven distinct cards from the full 78-card deck — the 22 Major Arcana plus the 56 Minor Arcana across Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles — dealt without replacement into the seven positions laid in the shape of a horseshoe. Read left to right: Past sets the influences you carry in, Present shows where things stand now, Hidden Influences names what is working out of sight, Obstacle marks the block to face, External Influences covers the people and circumstances around you, Guidance points to the attitude or action to take, and Outcome shows where the current path leads. Each card gets a fair Upright or Reversed orientation and shows its keyword meaning, so the seven positions read together as one story.

Fair random selection

The seven cards are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates draw and taken from the top of the deck, so no card can repeat within a spread, then each card flips a fair 50/50 orientation when reversed cards are enabled. Rangdom uses cryptographically secure randomness, so the next spread is not predictable from previous draws.

Upright and reversed

Keep the “Include reversed cards” toggle on for the traditional 50/50 chance of a reversed card in each position, or turn it off when every card should land Upright.

When to use it

The Horseshoe is a classic seven-card spread that sits between a quick three-card read and the full ten-card Celtic Cross: broad enough to weigh past, present, and outcome alongside hidden factors and outside influences, yet compact enough to read in one sitting. Use it when a single question needs more context than Past · Present · Future but you do not want the depth of the Celtic Cross.
